Septic systems are forgiving — until they're not. A few small habits make the difference between a system that lasts 30+ years and one that fails in 12. Here's the short version we give every customer.
Do
- Pump the tank every 2–5 years
- Spread out laundry across the week instead of doing it all in one day
- Fix leaky toilets and dripping taps quickly — they overload the bed
- Install risers so the tank lid is at grade for future pumps
- Keep good records of every pump, inspection, and repair
- Direct downspouts and surface water AWAY from the leaching bed
Don't
- Don't flush wipes — "flushable" is a marketing word, not a fact
- Don't pour grease, oil, or fat down the drain
- Don't dump paint, solvents, or harsh chemicals
- Don't drive or park over the tank or leaching bed
- Don't plant trees or shrubs over the bed (roots find pipes)
- Don't connect a sump pump or roof drains into the septic
- Don't run a hot tub drain into the system
What about additives?
Most septic additives don't help and some actively hurt. A healthy septic system already has the bacteria it needs. Save your money — pump on schedule instead.
Garbage disposals
If you have a septic system, a garbage disposal is the single biggest avoidable load. If you must use one, pump 30–50% more often.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Are flushable wipes really safe for septic?
- No. They don't break down like toilet paper. They build up in the tank, clog baffles, and are one of the most common causes of preventable backups.
- Can I do all my laundry on Saturday?
- Try not to. Spreading laundry across the week prevents flooding the leaching bed. Three loads on Saturday is much harder on the system than three loads spread over three days.
- Do septic additives work?
- Most don't help, and some can actively damage the bacteria balance or push solids into the bed. Skip the additives and pump on schedule.
