A great lawn is mostly about what's underneath the grass. Skimp on topsoil depth or skip the prep, and your sod browns out by August. Do it right and it thrives for decades.
Our process
- Strip or amend existing surface
- Bring in screened topsoil — minimum 4 inches
- Grade for drainage away from the house
- Roll and level
- Lay sod tight, joints staggered
- Roll again to seat the roots
- Initial deep watering
Aftercare
Water heavily for the first 2 weeks, then taper. Don't mow for 10–14 days. We give you a written watering and mowing schedule with every install.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How thick should topsoil be under sod?
- A minimum of 4 inches of screened topsoil is the standard. Less than that and the roots can't establish properly.
- Can sod be installed in summer heat?
- Yes, but it needs more water. Spring and fall are easier on the lawn and on your water bill.
