What to Expect During a New Septic Install

From permits and design to excavation and inspection — here's exactly what happens during a new septic system installation, and how long each step takes.

A new septic install is a bigger project than most people expect — but it's also a project that should run on a clear timeline. If you know what's coming, the whole thing is much less stressful. Here's how a typical install goes from first call to final cover.

Step 1: Site visit and design (1–2 weeks)

We come out, look at the lot, check setbacks (well, lake, property lines), and talk through where the tank and bed can go. Then a designer drafts the system based on number of bedrooms, soil tests, and lot conditions.

Step 2: Permit application (2–6 weeks)

The design package goes to your local septic authority for permit approval. Timing varies a lot by municipality — some are quick, others take a month or more, especially in spring and summer.

Step 3: Scheduling install

Once permit is in hand, you get a real install date. Most full installs take 2–5 working days on site, depending on weather, soil, and whether sand needs to be brought in.

Step 4: Excavation

We dig out the tank location and the leaching bed area. Old systems get pumped, removed, and disposed of properly.

Step 5: Tank set and plumbing

The new tank is set level on a stable base, the inlet and outlet are connected to the house and the bed, and risers are installed up to grade for easy future access.

Step 6: Leaching bed construction

Sand and stone are placed to spec, distribution piping is laid out, and the bed is built to match the design exactly — that's what gets you final inspection.

Step 7: Final inspection

Before backfill, the inspector comes out and signs off that everything matches the approved design. Once approved, the system is covered, graded, and seeded.

Step 8: Final cleanup and walkthrough

We tidy up the site, walk you through how to use the system, and give you a maintenance schedule so you start on the right foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a septic install actually take on site?
Most full residential installs take 2–5 working days on site once we start digging. Permit approval is what stretches the overall timeline.
Do I need a permit for a new septic system in Ontario?
Yes. Any new system, replacement, or major alteration needs a permit from your local septic authority.
Can I live in the house during installation?
Usually yes, but you'll have limited or no septic use for 1–3 days while the tank is being swapped. We coordinate that with you in advance.
