Septic tank pumping is the most important — and most often skipped — piece of septic maintenance. Done on time, it's a routine few-hundred-dollar service. Skipped too long, it sets off a chain of failures that can cost tens of thousands. Here's how it actually works.
What pumping actually does
A septic tank separates wastewater into three layers: scum on top, clear effluent in the middle, and sludge on the bottom. Only the clear effluent is supposed to flow out to the bed. Pumping removes the scum and sludge before they reach a level where solids start escaping into the bed and clogging the soil.
How often you need it
Most Ontario homes need pumping every 2–5 years. The exact interval depends on tank size, household size, and water use. We cover this in detail in our "How Often Should You Pump Your Septic" guide.
What happens during a pump-out
- We locate and uncover the tank lid (no charge if exposed; small fee if buried)
- We pump out the entire contents — scum, effluent, and sludge
- We inspect the inside of the tank: walls, baffles, inlet/outlet T's
- We check the effluent filter (if equipped) and clean it
- We note the tank size, condition, and any concerns in your file
- We close it up and leave the site clean
What it costs
Routine pump-outs for a standard 1000-gallon tank are typically a few hundred dollars. Buried lids add a dig-up fee. Larger tanks pump for slightly more.
